Angel Coulby Interview
MERLIN beauty Angel Coulby, the woman who would be queen, has spoken of the spooky coincidence of the royal wedding.
Speaking in Birmingham, the actress said she “couldn’t believe” that her storyline in the BBC1 drama was mirrored by last week’s royal wedding announcement. In the Saturday primetime programme, Angel’s character, commoner serving girl Gwen, ends up marrying Prince Arthur and eventually becoming Queen Guinevere.
Angel was appearing at the Winter Memorabilia Show at the NEC, where she signed autographs and chatted to fans.
The third series of Merlin has just been shown on TV and next April Angel will start shooting the fourth series.
She said last week’s announcement of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement made her smile.
“What a coincidence!” she said. “The week after my feelings for Prince Arthur were revealed, we have real life imitating fiction, with a commoner marrying a royal.”
Angel also revealed she still could not believe she was starring in one of the biggest shows on television. Merlin is a ratings hit, viewed by millions each week.
“I always knew it was going to be popular, but never imagined it would be as big as it is,” she said. “It’s my highest-profile role and I still can’t believe I get recognised in the street.
“Most people are really nice, though. The strangest place I got recognised was in a kebab shop late at night when they bowed down and asked for my autograph ‘my lady’!”
Thousands of fans flocked to the NEC to buy memorabilia and see famous faces from the world of TV, sport and cinema.
Among the big names signing autographs were Harry Potter stars David Bradley, who plays cantankerous caretaker Argus Filch, and charms master Filius Flitwick – actor Warwick Davis.
Stars of The Sarah Jane Adventures, Tommy Knight and Anjili Mohindra, were also there, as were Dr Who actors Ian McNeice and Katy Manning.
Representing Planet of the Apes was David Warner, Only Fools and Horses fans could meet Boycey, aka actor John Challis, and there was also ‘Allo Allo’s Vicki Michelle.
From the world of sport representing wrestling was Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart signing autographs and posing for photographs with his famous WWF Winged Eagle Belt.
Also meeting fans were snooker legend Dennis Taylor and boxer Barry McGuigan.
